Recently the Granite Shield corporate office received a phone call from a woman that needed help with her granite. She never had Granite Shield applied to her granite. It was dull, lifeless and very rough. Craig went out to the customer's home who was using Pledge Polish on her Sunset Gold granite. It was coated in a foggy haze which left the whole countertop dull and lifeless, as well as a very rough to the touch which is why she called Granite Shield to fix the problem.

Craig first cleaned the granite using Granite Shield's Granite Kleen and then used Granite Shield's Silicabright and a white Scotch-Brite pad to remove the Pledge. Some areas even needed to be scraped with a razor blade. After cleaning with Silicabright he then switched to a white terry cloth towel and more Granite Kleen to remove the last of the haze. He was then able to then continue using the light granite sealing process and that left the granite with a high gloss and perfectly smooth.

There is currently no penetrating sealer that can stop etching on calcite based stones. On Absolute Black granite etching causes gray rings and spots on the surface. A topical sealer is not recommended for natural stone because it blocks the pores of the natural stone then can't breathe and the top coating can scratch easy. So what happens to natural stone that can't breathe? Moisture gets trapped and can cause a chemical and mineralogical change within the stone. This action of decay in natural stone may take form of pitting, spalling, flaking and oxidation. You want your natural stone to breathe or it will disintegrate.

The Granite Shield process on calcite based stones will not prevent surface etching but will reduce it about 80%. Granite Shield does have a repair kit that should etching happen if sealed with Granite Shield sealers remove etching in minutes on polished or honed surfaces. Acidic liquids, alcohol and vinegar can etch marble, travertine and limestone if left unattended on your stone surface. Water with a lower pH level lower than 7 is considered acidic.

Real or Dyed?

The original quarry that Absolute Black granite came from was from South Africa. That granite was so dense the granite didn't need to be sealed to protect it from staining.

In recent years Absolute Black granite has become very popular and China and some other countries started exporting Absolute Black granite unfortunately in many cases it's not the same dense Absolute Black granite that was coming from South Africa. The Absolute Black granite that has been coming from other countries is dense granite but in many cases isn't really black but a gray calcite based stone such as marble that will etch like marble leaving gray rings and spots should acidic liquids come in contact with the stone. Many have dyed these gray stones to make the stone black or more black.

To be assured you are purchasing a true Absolute Black granite all you need to do is a simple test by pouring a little bit of lemon juice onto the Absolute Black granite and should it turn gray the stone is not a true Absolute Black Granite. In most cases it's not the fault of the slab yard or granite fabricator because many believe they purchased a true Absolute Black granite and have no idea the stone was dyed. If you have an Absolute Black granite that you do believe is a dyed Absolute Black granite you need to protect it the best you can keeping it very repellent so should acidic liquids come in contact with your stone it will repel the liquid for a period of time before leaving gray rings and spots. It's a personal choice you may even like the appearance of the Absolute Black granite even if it may be a dyed stone.

“I thought I'd share with you a fun exercise I conducted with Silicabright. As you may recall we have a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500. The wheels on this vehicle are steel with a chrome covering. Due to its being a work truck it does not always get washed as would a personal vehicle. As a result brake dust has badly deteriorated the chrome on the front wheel cover. I have attempted on several occasions to rid the marks with soap and water, acidic professional white wall cleaners, and several other products common in the auto industry. To date, I have had minimal success. The wheel usually improves, but is never restored.

I thought this might be a good test for some Granite Shield products. I have attached some images of the results that you may find interesting.

With using just a dab of Silicabright followed by Kleen N Shine with a micro-fiber towel the wheel in the image was quite literally restored to new finish quality. The wheels didn't look this good when I originally took receipt of the truck and it has just been professionally detailed. Attached are 2 "before" and 2 "after" images.”

My Granite Fabricator Lied to Me!

"Dear Granite Shield,

We just got our granite countertops installed. The contractor lied to us and told us it was already sealed. Yet, water soaked straight through and the stone is not shiny. After researching, I discovered a test for granite and basically discovered I need to seal it. I tried to use a sealer bought from Home Depot. First few days, the water beaded up. But, in a week, after heavy use of the kitchen, the water was already soaking through the stone. There is water stains around the faucet where water collects all the time. It is not drying up.
